What top HIIT trainer Tanya Poppett eats during winter to stay lean and toned

Hands up if you’ve been personally victimised by the motivation tactic of having a Victoria’s Secret model as your phone’s screen saver?

Don’t worry, we’ve all been down that track. And if you’re one of those lucky (aka annoying) people who’ll be heading off to enjoy a glorious summer in Europe soon, there’s a 99 per cent chance your screen saver has been just that ever since you booked the trip.

But for those of us less fortunate ones who’ll be trapped down-under for the remainder of this never-ending winter season, first thing’s first: you don’t need no Gigi Hadid or Alessandra Ambrosio to motivate you. For your summer body to actually be made in winter, you need to look no further than adidas ambassador and top HIIT trainer, Tanya Poppett.

There’s a few clear reasons as to why she has over 362k followers on Instagram alone – one, we would all kill for her ripped abs; two, she manages to make burpees look like the world’s easiest exercise when in actual fact they’re painful AF; and three, no matter what season it is, she never seems like she loses the motivation to workout.

While you can attempt to do a thousand crunches a day in hopes your tum will look likes her comes summer, you sadly have to start with changing your diet before anything else.

So what does a ripped trainer eat to stay lean and toned? A plant-based diet rich in deliciousness (mostly because there’s chocolate involved).

Breakfast

Protein oats and raspberries (using plant-based protein), and a coffee with soy milk

Morning snack

Banana and peanut butter toast

Lunch

Falafel + salad + quinoa + hummus buddah bowl

Afternoon snack

Fruit, nuts, and carrot sticks

Dinner

Tofu curry with brown rice

Dessert

25g dark chocolate…which sometimes turns out to be 50g

To keep her hydration levels up, which she even admits can be difficult during winter, she opts for “hot water or herbal tea to keep warm” whilst also keeping her fluids up.

Of course, along with her healthy diet, she makes sure she moves every day and changes up her workouts with a mix of strength, LISS, gymnastics, and anaerobic intervals.

If you simply can’t seem to find the motivation to get yourself off that couch and put down that bowl of popcorn, you also definitely need some motivation advice from the girl who regularly gets up at 3:45am to head to the gym (we repeat that, 3:45am #ded).

“Motivation is amplified by ‘purpose’. Dig deep and find your ‘why’ and remind yourself of it daily. This will feed the disciple and habit needed to bring this to life.”

When she’s lacking motivation, she asks herself four simple questions: “Are you fatigued? Out of routine? Sore? Hungry?

“If this can be easily solved, then solve it. If exercise is going to solve it, then exercise. If exercise is going to make it worse, then rest or adjust your training accordingly.”

Just saying, if you want to Poppet like it’s hot, she’s the gal that needs to be on your screen saver.

Tanya Poppett is a proud supporter of the adidas x Parley for the Oceans worldwide initiative. Between June 8 and July 8, adidas and Parley are calling on their global communities to take action and protect the oceans that are increasingly endangered due to manmade issues including pollution, waste, and growing consumption. Partnering up with the Runtastic app, individuals can track their runs, where adidas will then match every kilometre ran with US$1 for the first one million kilometres. Proceeds will go towards the Parley ocean School Program, which raises awareness for the threat of marine plastic pollution. For more information, head here.
