Now the top 50 gastropubs in the UK have been named in a definitive list.
The top ten entries in the “Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropub Awards” represent the cream of the crop, and are spread across the UK.
Taking the number one spot for a third year it The Sportsman in Whitstable, Kent.
Hailed as one of the best foodie destinations in the UK, The Sportsman is led by chef-patron Stephen Harris, a self-taught former city worker.
Bristol’s The Pony and Trap, a Michelin star venue since 2011, took second place this year.
In third place is The Star Inn, York, a venue which has climbed the ranks over the years, taking third and fifth place in 2016 and 2015 respectively.
Lancashire, Buckinghamshire, London, Berkshire and Abergavenny all also had pubs make the top ten.
Winners are voted for by “top foodies and hospitality experts”, organisers say, including gastropub operators (who can’t vote for their own pubs), food writers, pubco catering development managers and executive chefs, celebrity and top hospitality industry chefs, pub guide editors, industry chiefs and food operators. Voters are broken down into six geographical regions to make sure each region of the UK has an equal chance to make the list.
Of the 50 gastropubs shortlisted, five were located in Maidenhead, a town in Berkshire. These included the Crown at Bray, The Royal Oak Paley Street, The Crown, The Hind’s Head, Maidenhead and The Beehive.
Editor of the Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs, Nicholas Robinson, said: “Gastropubs are unique for many reasons, mainly because they blur the lines between pubs and restaurants, yet maintain the charm and atmosphere of a traditional pub.
“They are amazing spaces that thrive as a result of the genius of the chefs in the kitchens and the managers who work hard at the front of the pub. This year’s Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs list shows how diverse gastropubs are up and down the country.”
The best fish and chip shops in the UK were also revealed recently.
Millers Fish & Chips in Haxby, York, North Yorkshire took the crown, to the delight of their owners.
The new UK champions were presented with their award during a prestigious awards ceremony at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London.
To win the top spot, Millers had to show off their skills during a multi-stage judging process over a seven-month period.
