The bike dance party you need to attend at least once in your life


When it comes to new fitness trends you can often expect the unexpected, but I wasn’t quite prepared for Vicious Cycle – a studio in Sydney’s CBD that offers spin classes with a real spin.

Yep, the only way to describe this class is a dance lesson on a bike. There is bopping, clapping and choreographed moves that ensure you’re not just working your legs but your core and arms as well. It’s a full-body burn that is equal parts pain and entertainment.

I headed there early on a Monday morning, expecting to sit on a bike and pedal for 45 minutes – but, wow, was I wrong. Once there, you enter a dark room, save for some neon lights, and literally lock yourself in thanks to special cleats that click your feet into the bike. You and the bike become one, and the idea is that you tune out for the next 45 minutes and just focus solely on yourself.

Those who are used to the Les Mills style of RPM beware, this is a total remix. It’s not hills, resistance and endurance tracks to Euro club songs, this is high-intensity riding with rhythm-based moves like clapping, pumping and crunching (I highly recommend wearing a high pony to make those side-to-side shimmies more impactful).

There is also a meditation track where you are encouraged to shut down your eyes, forget your worries and simply ride in the dark. Those wanting to tone your guns, there is even a weight track.

If anyone has seen movies featuring US smash workout SoulCycle (we’re looking at you Amy Schumer’sI Feel Pretty), this is the closest thing to it I’ve experienced in Australia – it’s all positive energy, soul building vibes and sensory experiences – lighting and diffusers feature strongly in the class. The best bit, however, is the community it has garnered. The morning I went, a front-row regular named Lisa was celebrating her birthday. The final track saw the entire room erupt into Stevie Wonder’s ‘Happy Birthday To You’ as Lisa was given a candle-lit cupcake. I can’t think of a better post-workout reward – especially when you’ve just burnt 300 calories.
