Lady Melissa Percy, 30, Missy to friends and family, is the youngest daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland (the family home is Alnwick Castle, aka Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films).

Sporty and with a passion for the countryside, her Mistamina fashion label is all about affordable, chic outdoor clothing designed for the fun and adventurous.

Missy, formerly married to Thomas van Straubenzee, Princess Charlotte of Cambridge’s godfather, lives in London and the Scottish Borders.

The designer’s logo T-shirt is by Zadig & Voltaire; her Springbok horn necklace by Okapi, from sustainably sourced materials, with Ray-Ban

How would you describe your style? Tomboyish with a feminine twist.

Which colours and shapes suit you best? I suit an A-line shape and simple lines. I’m not a frills and flounces kind of person. Colour-wise, I prefer pastels, brights and traditional hues to black.

What inspired you to create Mistamina? I spend my life outdoors, but I’ve never been able to find country clothing combining practicality with femininity or edginess. The challenge was to create affordable, comfortable, quality female outerwear with a tomboy edge, which you can wear shooting, canoeing or hiking, while also being stylish enough for the city. So, I’ve come up with a capsule collection of bomber jackets, funky knitwear and loose and structured suede-effect shirts in a range of gorgeous colours.

Did you set out to be a fashion designer? No, I used to be a tennis coach and cook. Both were great as hobbies, but they weren’t satisfying me career-wise. I could see there was an opportunity for a fashion line, so two years ago I decided to make my own.

What is your favourite fashion era? The 60s and 70s. For me, it’s all about the flares.

What are your favourite high- street brands? Zara, French Connection and Urban Outfitters.

Who is your favourite designer? Alexander McQueen. I didn’t have a dress to wear for my 30th birthday party and went into Harrods on the day. I tried on two long dresses by Alexander McQueen. I chose a white one and my parents bought it for me. It’s exquisite, with a high neck, short sleeves and a jewel-embroidered bodice. I wore it with Gianvito Rossi sparkly heels and an Anya Hindmarch clutch bag.

Do you have a style icon? No. I admire other people’s style, but I’d never want to copy anyone.

What is your best beauty secret? Electric eyelash curlers. I don’t wear a lot of make-up, but these are a must. Plus Estée Lauder’s hydrating foam wash, moisturiser and serum.

How do you keep fit? In London I put my headphones on and go for a run. In Scotland, I’ll run with the dogs, go hiking and canoeing.

Are you a hoarder or do you clear out your wardrobe each season? I clear out regularly, I get flustered if I run out of space.

Are you a fan of vintage? Yes. Edinburgh has great vintage shops and I’ve picked up some wonderful oversized shirts and jackets.

How many shoes and handbags do you own? Not that many. I’m more of a sunglasses and bikinis girl. I’ve only got 20 pairs of shoes and boots, and five handbags.

What is the best piece of fashion advice you have been given? Dress for the weather and go for layers, especially when it’s cold. You can always peel off.

What is your current favourite outfit? My Frank bomber jacket over my khaki Rupert shirt with boyfriend-fit Diesel jeans.

Is there an old favourite you turn to in a wardrobe crisis? High-waisted Rag & Bone jeans with my black Stanley jumper, black Prada boots and black Acne jacket.

How much do you spend on clothes each month? About £400.

What is the most expensive item in your wardrobe? And best bargain? The most expensive item I’ve bought is my Acne jacket at £900. My best bargain is a strappy top from Tesco for next to nothing.

What is the oldest item in your wardrobe? A navy blue Chloé blazer I was given when I was 14.

Who made your wedding dress? It was a separate skirt and top by Bruce Oldfield. There were two skirts, one for the dancing in the evening. I will always keep it.

Have you a favourite little black dress? It was a high-neck style by Maje, but I’ve worn it out. A new LBD is on my wish list this season.

What is your favourite piece of jewellery? I’m fascinated by sharks. I have a shark tattoo on my tummy, so probably one of my shark’s tooth necklaces. I have some special pieces, too. On my 21st birthday, I was given diamond earrings with a matching flowery necklace by my parents. I wore them for my wedding and my 30th, but normally they are kept under lock and key.
