Kate Middleton, 36, made a visit to the Bethlem Royal Hospital in south-east London today to meet mothers being treated for mental health conditions.
The Duchess arrived at the specialist NHS unit caring for the women alongside their children wearing a powder blue outfit. During the visit, Kate will chat to the clinicians and patients and learn more about the issues surrounding maternal mental health.
Dr Gertrude Seneviratne, Lead of the Perinatal Mental Health Services, Consultant in General Adult and Perinatal Psychiatry, and Chair of the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Perinatal Faculty, said: “The arrival of a baby should be the happiest time in a woman’s life, but for some women this is not the case – our research shows that one in four women experience mental health problems during pregnancy or shortly after the baby is born.
“Mothers often arrive here in much mental distress, feeling that they can’t do things for themselves, but by keeping mother and baby together and providing a range of specialist treatment and therapy, women do recover and can bond with their child.
“Today is a very special occasion for us. It means a great deal to staff and patients that The Duchess was able to spend some time meeting them – especially as she is a mother herself.”
The Mother and Baby Unit at the Bethlem Royal Hospital is part of South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. The 13-bed unit was set up for women who develop or have a relapse of serious mental illness during pregnancy or following the birth of their baby.
Her outfit today is her second blue look of the week, as she chose the colour yesterday. Today, the mum-of-two chose a baby blue princess coat from Seraphine which sat tightly over her baby bump.
A blue floral print dress, also from Seraphine, could be seen poking out from underneath the coat.
Kate was well accessorised for the day, wearing a pair of sapphire and diamond drop earrings as well as her engagement ring.
She carried a navy quilted clutch bag in one hand, a red umbrella protecting her from the rain in the other.
Like yesterday, Kate wore a pair of navy blue suede court shoes on her feet – a decision she was probably regretting with the heavy rain.
Normally, Kate’s hair is the crowning glory of her look, but today she kept her brunette locks tamed, sweeping her hair back into a ponytail.
Her makeup was simple, with the Duchess choosing to wear simple eyeshadow and nude lipgloss.
Yesterday, Kate chose an entirely blue outfit for an appearance at a London primary school, perhaps hinting that she is expecting a baby boy in April.
The Sportmax coat, which she last wore on a visit to the Emma Bridgewater factory in 2015, featured large lapels which came down in a deep v, and Kate kept her neck covered with a scarf.
The Beulah London scarf, £95, was made up of a print of many blue shades to complement the coat.
She paired the coat, which is now sold out but originally cost $2490, with a pair of suede court shoes and blue sapphire drop earrings.
Underneath the Duchess wore the Valerie maternity dress from Séraphine, £99.
