When you think of a job which keeps you in shape, firefighter or postie probably spring to mind.

But you can stay in shape and get thin while doing a desk job too – if you know what you’re doing.

New research shows that simply standing at your workstation could help you lose 10 kilos over four years – even if you might look a bit of a prat doing it.

Here, fitness expert Alex Crockford gives her top ways to work out without having to leave work.

CHAIR DIPS

Keep those muscles toned even sat at your desk.

Place your hands on your chair – first making sure that the wheels are locked – and push yourself up and down to work those triceps. You can burn up to 10 calories per set and get a toned upper body.

FILING GREAT

A quickie up against the filing cabinet is usually a sackable offence. But doing press-ups is a fast and simple way to keep looking your best if you can’t get to the gym.

It can work the upper body, tone the arms and abs and boost your core. A three-minute routine every day for a week can burn 100 calories.

STEP ON IT

Taking the stairs instead of using the lift is a great way to keep in shape. It will get your heart pumping and help tone your legs.

If you work in a high-rise office, get out of the lift a couple of floors below and walk up from there.

An extra ten minutes up and down the stairwell every day could burn more than 100 extra calories.

CALL TO ARMS

Launch your exercise regime from your office chair. After hitting the keyboard give those arm muscles some much needed attention.

Use a cushion, water bottle or anything with a bit of weight to do arm raises.

This will help tone arms, chest and shoulders just sitting at your desk and burn another 40 calories for every five minutes.

COFFEE PERK

Waiting for your drink at the coffee machine is the ideal time for a tone-up.

Squats can mocha the difference and are great for toning your lower body and bum.

Lots of coffee equals lots of reps and that means lots of calories burnt.

If you do squats for three minutes and drink three coffees a day you could burn an extra 75 calories.
