I don’t know about you but the soundtrack of my yoga practice is a strict rotation of Enya, Tibetan chants and rainforest sounds.
But according to Spotify, I’ve been missing out. The music giant has found that yoga practitioners around the world are bringing the ancient practice into the 21st century with playlists filled with everyone from Sia to Kalid. And there’s science to suggest that indulging in a little yoga pop could be a deeper, more relaxing experience.
“There is a growing interest globally on the impact certain music has on performance,” says Dr. Amanda Krause, research fellow at The University of Melbourne, Australia, who specialises in the social and applied psychology of music. “We refer to it in the industry as ‘musical fit,’ where the type of music you feel ‘fits’ an activity creates an impact on the way you physically react.”
“With this playlist, the variety of music has likely been chosen because people have judged this music to fit specifically with doing yoga,” she says.
“The music choices may have the right tempo and/or rhythm to complement a yoga practice. In this way, these choices also could be helping with the timing – in other words, the beat/rhythm could be perfect for moving through the timing of yoga positions/poses.”
So if you’re looking to get a better, more relaxing experience from your yoga playlist – here some of the top songs yogis are streaming around the world.
